Kerrville is the Hill Country city that lived its life independently of the wine-and-weekend tourism economy that transformed Fredericksburg and Wimberley. Itโs a real city of 25,000 with Schreiner University, a regional medical center, and a commercial downtown on the Guadalupe River that serves the surrounding Hill Country rather than catering primarily to Austin and San Antonio visitors. That independence gives it a character โ unpretentious, comfortable, genuinely Hill Country โ that the more tourist-oriented towns sometimes lack.
The Museum of Western Art is the cultural anchor โ a serious collection of Western American painting and bronze sculpture that would be notable in any city. The original Cowboy Artists of America collection includes major works by Tom Ryan, James Boren, and other artists who defined the 20th-century Western art tradition. Itโs free to enter, architecturally distinguished, and consistently underrated on Texasโs cultural map.
The Guadalupe River runs through the city and the Kerrville-Schreiner State Park manages the best river access. The cypress-lined river has flat-water kayaking, excellent swimming holes, and the clear limestone-filtered water that characterizes the best Hill Country rivers. The parkโs 500+ acres include camping, hiking trails, and fishing in addition to the river activities.
The Kerrville Folk Festival โ 18 days in late May and early June on a permanent campground facility โ is the cultural event that defines the cityโs musical identity. Founded in 1972, it has launched or amplified careers from Townes Van Zandt to Lyle Lovett to Patty Griffin. The New Folk competition, an annual songwriter showcase, has been a launching pad for emerging Texas and national folk talent for 50 years. For folk music devotees, the Festival is a pilgrimage.
The Arrival
Drive I-10 west from San Antonio into the Hill Country and arrive in Kerrville on the Guadalupe River โ the Hill Country's most authentically lived-in city.
Why Kerrville is quintessentially Texas
Kerrville represents the Hill Country that existed before the wine trails and wedding venue economy โ a real Hill Country city with German and Anglo heritage, a river-based agricultural and ranching economy, and a community that built institutions (the university, the folk festival, the art museum) that serve its own population rather than import culture from outside.
The Western art tradition represented at the Museum of Western Art is genuinely Texan โ the painting and sculpture of the American West as understood by Texas artists working in the mid-to-late 20th century. The Cowboy Artists of America, founded in Kerrville in 1965, committed to realistic depiction of the cowboy and ranching life they knew directly. This is Western art by people who lived the life, not romanticized by artists who studied it from a distance.
The Folk Festivalโs Texas character is equally specific. The singer-songwriter tradition represented here โ from Townes Van Zandtโs existential honesty to Robert Earl Keenโs Texas narrative ballads to Nanci Griffithโs plains-folk lyricism โ is a literary tradition as much as a musical one. The songwriters who played Kerrville wrote Texas as poetry.
What To Explore
Museum of Western Art, Guadalupe River kayaking and swimming, the Folk Festival in late May, and the genuine Hill Country city that the wine trail towns aspire to be.
What should you do in Kerrville?
Museum of Western Art โ Free. Major collection of Western American paintings and bronzes. The Cowboy Artists of America core collection is the anchor. Allow 2 hours.

Kerrville Folk Festival โ Late Mayโearly June, 18 days. Daily and weekend passes. The New Folk competition is the week 1 highlight. Camping on site. Book early โ the festival campground sells out.

Riverside Nature Center โ Free or low-cost. Native plant gardens and nature education along the river. Excellent birding in the riparian habitat.
- Getting There: San Antonio is 65 minutes southeast on I-10. Fredericksburg is 25 minutes northeast. Bandera is 30 minutes east on TX-16 โ an excellent pairing for a western Hill Country circuit.
- Best Time: Late Mayโearly June for the Folk Festival. MarchโApril for spring wildflowers and ideal river conditions. October for fall color on the Guadalupe.
- Folk Festival: Book camp spots or nearby accommodation early โ the festival draws a loyal repeat audience that books a year in advance. Weekend passes are more accessible than the full 18-day experience.
- Don't Miss: The Museum of Western Art. The free admission is misleading โ this is a serious art museum with a major collection, not a tourist attraction. The realist Western painting tradition represented here is an underappreciated American art movement.
- Avoid: Expecting Kerrville to be Fredericksburg. It's less polished, less tourist-oriented, and more genuinely itself. The restaurants and shops serve the community first and visitors second. This is a feature, not a bug.
- Texas Truth: Townes Van Zandt played the Kerrville Folk Festival in its early years and wrote "Pancho and Lefty" in a tent near the campground. True or legend, the story is consistent with Kerrville's role as the place where Texas's most honest musical tradition found a home.
