Dripping Springs is where Austin goes to drink well and swim in spring-fed water. Twenty-five miles west of the city on US-290, the Hill Country limestone geology begins in earnest here โ the cedar-covered hills, the spring-fed creeks, the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone โ and alongside the landscape, a craft beverage industry has built itself into one of the densest concentrations of distilleries, breweries, and wineries in Texas.
Hamilton Pool Preserve is the natural anchor โ a collapsed grotto with a jade-green swimming hole and a 50-foot waterfall that has been a Travis County geological landmark since the property was donated for preservation in 1990. The timed entry reservation system (mandatory, $15/vehicle, sells out weeks in advance in season) is the price of experiencing one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in Texas. The water is cold year-round, the overhanging limestone walls create a canyon effect, and on a weekday morning with a small group the place is extraordinary.
The distillery trail is the other anchor. Deep Eddy Vodka, Treaty Oak Distilling, and a dozen others have built tasting rooms and visitor experiences in the Dripping Springs area โ some in converted barns, some in purpose-built facilities, all reflecting the Austin-adjacent craft culture that has invested in quality over the past decade. Jester King Brewery, 10 miles west of town, has built one of the most acclaimed farmhouse brewery operations in the country on 165 acres of limestone farmland.
Pedernales Falls State Park 13 miles north adds the classic Hill Country river experience โ stepped limestone falls, swimming holes, camping, and tubing. Dripping Springs sits at the center of a triangle connecting Hamilton Pool, the Pedernales, and the US-290 distillery corridor, making it one of the most activity-rich Hill Country stops of comparable size.
The Arrival
Drive US-290 west from Austin into the Hill Country where the cedar hills begin, the spring water is cold, and 20 distilleries wait along the road.
Why Dripping Springs is quintessentially Texas
Dripping Springs embodies the contemporary Hill Country economy โ the land that was cattle country and cedar cutting has transformed into craft beverage production, wedding venues, and Austin-adjacent lifestyle destination. The transformation is not entirely comfortable for longtime residents watching their communityโs character change, but the craft beverage quality is undeniable and the natural features that attract visitors were here before the distilleries.
The Edwards Aquifer recharge zone โ the geological formation where rainwater percolates through limestone cracks and joints into the underground aquifer that supplies drinking water for San Antonio and Central Texas โ runs directly under Dripping Springs. The springs that give the town its name are this aquifer surfacing in the Hill Country topography. The water that visitors swim in at Hamilton Pool and Pedernales Falls is the same water that millions of Central Texans drink. This hydrogeological fact gives the landscape its specific character and also its environmental vulnerability.
The Texas craft spirits industry โ which Texas law only allowed to develop in the 2010s with changes to distillery permit regulations โ found a home in Dripping Springs partly because of the water quality and partly because the proximity to Austin provided a built-in customer base. The cluster effect (20+ producers within 20 miles) creates a competitive environment that has raised quality across the board.
